Drug Addiction Help in Welfare Deal

Although some people may say that those who got addicted to drugs have to one to blame but themselves can be true, it may not always be the case. There are so many reasons why one has been addicted to drugs and we can never judge these people. The least that we can do for them is to help them change their lives for the better. We can always support them, especially those who are willing to change. These people need to see and feel and the society can still accept them. This is the reason why the government needs to be more sensible in giving help to drug addicts. Being able to come up with the right support systems is very important. The article below talks about drug addiction help in welfare deal. Read here.

An extra $40 million will flow to drug addiction services after a minor party struck a deal with the federal government over welfare reform.

The Nick Xenophon Team backed the package headlined by a demerit-point system which could see people who fail to meet job-seeking obligations having their dole payments docked. The legislation effectively passed the Senate on Thursday, with NXT's support coming in return for $20 million for methamphetamine rehabilitation facilities in South Australia. They secured the same amount for doctors and allied health professionals in regional and remote areas to access professional development and specialist skills in addiction. "There are only about 100 full-time equivalent addiction specialists in Australia and few GPs, especially doctors in regional and remote areas, that have the knowledge to effectively support Centrelink recipients with addiction issues," NXT MP Rebekah Sharkie said. The government dumped a controversial plan to drug test welfare recipients, which was a stumbling block in the Senate. "We believe the government should be spending extra money to help people overcome their addictions, not testing people for drugs," Ms Sharkie said.
